farmers agitation

It is true that, all the sectors in an economy are interrelated and development of one sector would result in the development of other sectors through the linkage effects as the PM has rightly stated .  But caution is required while allotting priority and favour a particular sector , because any wrong  choice would  result in adverse economic consequences. The nation knows that, in  India Agricultural sector is the key and primary sector supporting the  other sectors . Any policy decisions and enactment of laws against this reality would  the  crush the interests  of the agriculturalists. The farmers are against the three laws passed in a hurry   without adequate parliamentary debates and  demanding the withdrawal of the laws and  hence,  resorted to agitation . At least the government can promise to keep the laws in abeyance till parliamentary debate is allowed and promise to introduce expected  amendments. Diplomacy in solving a  problem  does not lie with adopting adamant  attitude   while sitting in the   bargaining table   but, to listen to the aggrieved  party too and arrive at an amicable solution.  Testing the bargaining  strength  of the respective parties would only result in loss of productivity in a nation which is already facing recessionary trends.

farmers protest

In a democracy, the ruling party should enact laws after considerable  discussions with all the stake holders and debates in the parliament in spite of their majority position. Resorting to ordinance root even in the case of very vital laws is not good  in a functioning democracy. Laws which help the growth of one sector at the expense other sectors  will not help the faster growth of an economy . Agriculture is the primary sector In India.  The Indian economy  depends on it for the requirements   of food, raw materials, industrial and tertiary sector’s development , employment generation  and  exports .   Any set back in that sector will have undesirable  linkage effects on the economy affecting the growth rate. The government should lend ears to the farmers grievances and fears and come to an amicable settlement with agitating farmers than considering their protests as politically motivated  and prolong this problem.
