Plight of women due to domestic violence

The various Tamil Nadu governments ruling this state  all these decades have been   trumpeting about  higher data on social indicators  of Tamil Nadu in comparison with other states of India . That includes data on status of  women too.  But,  the article, “ No safe haven for women at home” by Vignesh Radha Krishnan and Rebecca Rose Varghese   in the Hindu have shown the excising reality about domestic violence suffered by women . The history of uneducated , poor , unemployed and timid  women with no exposure to outside world  to know about the social , legal and political changes that are taking place in women’s life in India can be narrated as a history of silence. They suffer all types of violence against them in the name of family honour, children’s future and   personal image. They suffer silently due to cultural ,economic and social factors.

Study after study on violence on women indicate that, alcoholism is the main factor responsible for domestic violence  .   The “NFHS data reveals that , the consumption of alcohol by men in Tamil Nadu is the highest in the country. “It is shocking to know that Tamil Nadu holds 4th rank in women’s suicide   and “Husband’s alcoholism is one of the top reasons women give when we quiz them later about why they tried to commit suicide,” said Dr Anish Cherian, from the Department of Psychiatric Social Work at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.  Is Tamil Nadu going to ignore this situation and watch silently the agony of women?

Host of measures are needed to protect women from domestic violence. Women need to have higher education, job in the organized sector, have  legal awareness about women protection laws, information on supporting  NGOs,courage to face challenges  of life than rushing towards suicide, sensitisation of police  on gender abuse matters .  These measures at least would help women to come out of unbearable abusive situations. It is also time for the Finance  Minister of Tamil Nadu to search into other new sources of revenue that would ,compensate for the excessive dependence on liquor revenue if ,they really are interested in women’s welfare in Tamil Nadu .

Three cheers to women of the world

The yester years women were described as beasts of burden because, they had more number of children, large sized families under the joint family system, managed household work without electronic gadgets. Therefore, they  spent more time in the kitchen, slogged for the whole day without leisure and were depending totally on men for their survival due to total dependence on fathers or husbands or brothers or sons for their survival .They never bothered about women rights or gender equity and rather enjoyed the protected life offered by men.

However, much has changed in women’s life in the last few decades after the UNO declared Women’s rights as human rights.  The spreading  of concept  like gender equity through women empowerment process led to the granting of education, training ,  health promotion, legal and political rights. Every country is engaged in women development measures so that women resource can  become a productive resource. Therefore, every homemaker currently is wanting to have their independent income either through  full time or part-time or flextime job or through home enterprises depending on their special level education and special job  skills, leisure time available, health position and the family’s  support.

Hence, at present, an impressive number of   Indian women    are working women with fi e financial independence . Such women have seven responsibilities. They are---Bearing and rearing of children, food management, household works management, health management, guest management, festivals management, and   the carrier management. Sometimes, even crisis management   becomes their responsibility.

All these responsibilities are to be managed through out their productive years, without any break and with greater efficacy. Job can not be an excuse for mismanaging the home front and home can not be the excuse for below expectation performance in office.

To  conduct their life in this manner i.e. balancing the carrier and the home front, the  empowered women of today have to be endowed with certain qualities such as , good health, time management skill,  juggling act expertise ,hard working ability , team management skill , public relation skill , labour management skills and to top it all good administrative capacity

Take for example, the food management responsibility. The right food, in the right quality, in the right quantity, and in the right time has to be served to the family members,   three times a day for many numbers of years without any break. The health of the family depends on the efficient performance of this task. While managing this task several factors such as balanced food, nutrition content, calorie content, environment cleanliness, drinking water quality etc., are to be taken care of. Children’s, adult’s and elder’s food requirement are different and this has to be taken care of. un expected guests are be fed to their satisfaction. Avoidance of wastage has to be given attention   Even the food budget has to be kept in mind in these days of inflation. Keeping regular supply and storage of the cooking materials requires meticulous planning. Food management is not an easy task especially when it is rendered for the whole life time of women, without any holidays. The difficulties associated with this task can be realised only when a mother falls sick for few days and unable to cook.

To deal with health matters knowledge about promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative matters needed.  For festival management, advance planning skill is needed.  For guest management, patience and warm-hardheartedness are needed.  To carry forward the family without debts and with savings financial management skill, demonstrated through surplus budgeting is needed. For maintain cordial  inter personal relationship with in-laws, guests and neighbors  very good public relation skill  is needed .children management is the toughest in the administration of family affairs.   The mothers have to act as friends, and guides to protect their children from the bad influence of the outside world and to prepare them for a competitive world.

The Corona pandemic has put excessive pressure on women. When the entire family was staying at home all through the day , the demand on their services multiplied . Moreover, they had to protect their members from exposure to outsiders , had to arrange for immunity building food  , watch for symptoms of Corona and seek timely medical treatment . They had to  put up of absence of domestic assistants, supply endless hot and cold drinks to those on online studies or jobs, assist children to cope up with online classes and wash vessels all through the day.   Yet marvelously they coped with all stresses and strains . They deserve all recondition and praise for coping with the pandemic

If we believe that the welbeing of nation depends on the welbeing of the society and which in turn depends on the welbeing of the individual families , we can state with 100 % certainty that the well being of the families revolves around the administrative capacity of women .Generally, most of the  women of the world irrespective of the differences in their nationality, language, religion and castes,  culture, economic and educational status and background  are good administrators of homes and carriers .

Men can never beat women in this matter. A widower finds it extremely difficult to manage home and children and has to rush for remarriage. However,   the same is not happening in the case of widows, because they can manage the crisis in their life with their special skills and hence not in a hurry for remarriage and such skills are God’s special gift to them. If there is a supporting family behind them, sky is the limit for them regarding their personal achievements. Even the HR managers in the corporate sector feel that women are better in multi tasking, balancing and team guiding skills after observing their abilities. Women do not consider these seven responsibilities as burden. They are rendered with devotion, love and desire for the welbeing of the family and that is the reason for the failure of the economists to come with a satisfactory theory to estimate the value of household works rendered by women. Women render efficient administrative service  free for the  family and without any holiday package it is 24x7 hours job  . Don’t they deserve three cheers during the season of International Women’s Day’s celebrations?

Hijab versus higher education

I worked  as a college teacher  in a women’s college run by minority Muslim trust  for 30 years  In Chennai.  During my service in that college,  as a gender economist  I have seen a steady increase in the enrollment Muslim girls. I was too happy to serve them  and being an instrument to help them in their empowerment process .Quite a number of them wore hijab. They wore it on their free will . They used to say that,  they feel secure and protected when traveling in public vehicles with hijab. Though  this college  was  managed by a Muslim trust no one questioned  other Muslim girls who were not wearing  hijab . That means,  choice of  wearing an attire was left to individuals  freewill. I was only happy to observe during my service that, many middle class and poor  families who would not  have sent their daughters  otherwise to higher education institutes   were   sending their daughters by public transport confidently  to colleges and they all became degree holders and some entered in the job market too,  by acquiring additional job skills.  Other   colleges in Chennai also do not mind Muslims girls entering their institutes with hijab  . To me ,  this hijab  wearing habit resulted in the economic and social empowerment of the back ward Muslim women community . I feel sad  to notice what is happening in Karnataka . There ,the Muslim girls are forced to take a decision whether they would give up  hijab or  their higher education because of the recent high court verdict on this subject . It is going to reverse  the empowerment process of the Muslim girls . The judgment passed never looked at this problem from this angle.

Female labour force participation in india

India ranks 120 among 131 countries in female labor force participation rate. Female labour participation rate in India fell  to a record low of 15.5% during the April-June 2020 quarter, when India imposed strict lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19 virus, as per  the report, released  by the Ministry of statistics . Mechanization of agriculture and modernization of industries have replaced  women by men long back.  Absence of higher education, job and digital skill are other reasons for women to remain without decent jobs. “ access to higher education , skill training and digital technology are the great enablers  to reap the potential of female labour force” in India. More over,  the government has to provide supporting services such as, scholarships and affordable women hostels to improve enrollment in higher education, easy credit for smart phones ,computer and two wheelers ,child care centers to take care of employed women , flexi time and work from home opportunities  for women and strict enforcement women specific labour laws . Were India to rebalance its workforce opportunities India too can apply  “womenomics” concept as  Japan did some time ago and reaped the benefits. Gender job gaps end up costing the economy. It is hard to develop an inclusive and sustainable way when nearly half of the population remains unproductive. Were India to rebalance its workforce, the IMF estimates, the worlds biggest democracy would be 27% richer. Its people would be well on their way to middle-income status.

BJPs win in 4 states

The BJPs victory in the recent elections( 4 states out of 5 ) is loudly and strongly conveying only one message, ie., The BJP  has succeeded in consolidating the Hindu majority votes . It looks as though , to the majority of the Hindus the devastation of the economy through demonetisation,  it’s crippling effect on the manufacturing sector, ever increasing oil prices and its effect on the middle class's  standard of living and on the economy, 3.1 % growth rate, dismal performance of the export sector, ever increasing inflation and unemployment data being highest (in 45 years )and the unresolved problems of the agricultural sector are not serious matters  to vote out the ruling  party.  It seems to them That Hinduism will be safe only under BJP rule and from Minorities “atrocities”. They only will do justice  by constructing  temples in all the places where foreign rulers have destroyed  them some 1000 years ago . BJP only will remove all the damages caused to India through following secularism ideology from 1947. Well done BJP for creating a new India  where they have successfully polarised the communities .

Crimes against women in Tamil Nadu

There are plenty of  news on increasing crimes against women in Tamil Nadu in recent times  . Rapes have become like hobby of men of all ages and occupations . It is true that, Tamil Nadu is better  than so many states of India,  in the social and economic indicators.it looks as though it would become soon number i in rapes cases. But it doesn’t mean that  , the government can treat the women’s safety problem  with lower priority.  The victims who lose their lives are mostly young women  who were living with clear  goals in life and dreaming of achieving them  through  higher education  and jobs with decent income and the offenders are also mostly young men from schools and colleges .  Their dreams in life also come to an abrupt end  with increasing violence against them .  The Tamil Nadu government has taken  serious note of the deteriorating law and order situation  in Tamil Nadu   and geared up the police department to improve the situation through control of activities of those with criminal records . Increasing crimes against women too is a law and order problem and need to controlled with iron hands .
